SUMMER TRAVEL, MUSINGS & MANGOS

It's mid-July and I haven't accomplished a fraction of the things on my To-Do List. The summer rains make it too hot, wet & muggy to spend much time outdoors. There's a lot to do inside, but I'm easily distracted by instant gratification projects...leaving the BIG ONES shunted off to the side.

MY BROTHER WITH ME AND HIS GIRLFRIEND ANNA

Toward the end of May I flew to Germany to meet up with my brother, his daughter & friends. It was the first time I've ever been to East Berlin and it wasn't what I anticipated. The vibe was more like NY's SoHo back in the day. Relatively inexpensive with lots of people under 50 walking about; small restaurants with international cuisine & vegetarian options; cute shops with unique goods; pocket parks and old Soviet housing blocks renovated into brightly painted co-ops. Although there is high unemployment, most people can afford to linger at a sidewalk cafe over an espresso.

SAMMLUNG BOROS BUNKER MUSEUM IN BERLIN

Not that you feel too far from the recent past. We visited a modern art museum housed in a former above-ground bunker. An extraordinary re-purposing of a building that withstood bombing during WWII and wasn't feasible to raze. After a long sordid past as a tropical fruit depot and '70s discos, the current owner spent years reforming it into a series of galleries. Like the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, each work of art was designed to blend into its space. Most of the large three-dimensional pieces dominate their own room.  Check out pictures taken during the 4 year renovation of Bunker Berlin, including the bulldozer on the roof, at www.sammlung-boros.de

WATCH TOWER NEXT TO THE OLD BERLIN WALL

BERLIN WALL MEMORIAL

The Berlin Wall Memorial, honoring those who perished seeking freedom, is sprawled over a large open area. Naked re-bar posts, sans concrete and big enough to walk through, grow skyward. There's an educational building, multilingual historical plaques, blow-ups of 1961 photos on the sides of buildings, a church and memorial garden. It was chilling to stand under the guard tower, looking at the exposed "killing zone", knowing that real people had died there. Lots to see and very moving. Makes you realize how easily we take FREEDOM for granted.
COMM TOWER BUILT BY THE RUSSIANS IN E. BERLIN

We spent hours at the Jewish Museum impressed at their in-depth collection detailing the long history of the Jews. I couldn't stop looking at personal effects and reading the stories of ordinary people, like you & me, who had committed no crimes yet were sent to death camps. It was emotionally exhausting because I came to feel that I knew each one in some small way, and suffered their loss. So I was shocked, later that day, at my reaction to the Holocaust Memorial

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL IN BERLIN
By contrast, there is nothing personal at the Memorial. It's comprised of huge rectangular granite blocks of varying heights, with walking paths between, as far as the eye can see. There are no inscriptions or references to the millions of lives they represent. I was angry that these sacrificed individuals were victimized yet again by being left nameless & faceless. The eerie sound of small children, giggling & shouting in German as they ran through the maze, felt disrespectful to me. I was left as cold as stone. Perhaps that was the designer's goal.

BIKES PARKED IN FRONT OF A GRAFFITI WALL IN BERLIN

COURTYARD OF TILED BUILDINGS

But Berlin is a lot more than just history and memories. You'll find fresh street art all over.

Graffiti is an art form in Berlin. While the cartoon style appears, the more talented produce intricate paintings (like the examples above & below) which leave one awe-struck .

Buildings in the old Jewish section reflect the influence of Moorish architecture. Amazingly, the entire exterior is made up of small individual tiles which have survived.

PAINTED ON A FADING YELLOW WALL

After a whirlwind weekend in Berlin we flew to southern Sweden for 10 more days. The cooler weather, slower pace and company of loved ones was very nourishing.

During that time I meet, dined with & embraced several families of recent Afghan refugees seeking political asylum in Sweden. Suddenly the reality of this awful prolonged war hit home.

These good kind people, with uncertain futures defined by the pull of invisible political strings, try desperately to make their children feel safe. They personify such amazing strength, courage and good humor. I was honored to meet them. My trip was almost idyllic until I got food poisoning on the flight home. There went the perfect vacation!!

Now, fully recovered and anxious to get back in the kitchen, I'm surprised that the fruit of my organic Keitt mango tree is ripening almost two months early

RIPE KEITT MANGO FROM MY ORGANIC TREE

Yes Virginia, climate change does exist!!! That means that there are luscious juicy ripe mangos available for you to eat, juice, bake or just embrace (as long as you aren't allergic to the clear sap like I am). It's better to pull them off the tree while not quite ripe, before the squirrel convention. If you'd like to buy some they're just $1-$2 each, depending on size. Call or email me at 941-746-6647 or bonnibakes@gmail.com

This is the prime season for me to be turning them into delicious Mango Chutney and unique jam combos. I sold loads at the Geraldson Sunday Farmer's Market this Spring and they're available directly from me until the Market re-opens October 7th.

ANNA WITH CHALLAH READY FOR THE OVEN
Last Fall-Winter I had a wonderful time working with my adorable long time assistant Anna, re-creating favorite treats from the Jewish bakeries of my childhood. Many of you were volunteer taste testers, which we appreciated. I'm hooked and want to bake more of that genre.

Starting Monday September 10, 2012 I'm launching a limited version of a NYC bake shop. Each Monday I'll post THIS WEEK'S PICK-UP MENU along side my weekly blog entry. You can see an example of what the MENU will look like, at the top of this page to the right. If you're interested in ordering something, contact me by Wed at 5pm. The items will be available for pick-up at my TreeHouse home in the Village of the Arts on the following Friday or Saturday. If you have special requests, please let me know. I plan to rotate a variety of bread, rolls & specialties each week. Amounts will be limited, so it's first come first served. We'll see how it goes.

Meanwhile, don't forget that the Village ArtWalks are a monthly event and the next one is Fri Aug 3 from 6-9pm and Sat Aug 4 from 11-4. I'll have a tent set up in my driveway at 932 12th St West both days, with lots of goodies. Hope it's a great summer and look forward to seeing you soon!

Hugs from my kitchen,
Bonni

MY LAST SUNDAY FARMER'S MARKET

This Sunday, May 20th, will be my final appearance at Geraldson Farm's Sunday Market. It's been a wonderful experience -- meeting new people, seeing old friends, sharing recipes and learning new skills. After weeks of practice I can finally take down a tent by myself...putting it up however, requires more than two hands and a little more height than I can muster.

It was hard deciding what to bring for this Sunday, my season finale.   I've decided on an assortment of those Big Cookies, especially the ones sporting large chunks of bittersweet Belgium chocolate.

I'll definitely bring Chocolate Orgasms, for all of the chocoholics among us.

In addition to my classic Rosemary Parmigiano Breadstix there will be packages of my new Kalamata Feta Breadstix

Back by popular demand will be those delicious Breakfast Muffins, a delicate corn muffin chock full of Cheddar, bacon & scallions. A great way to start the day, at any time of the day. And they freeze well too.

My classic Keitt Mango Chutney, will be available, along with some free recipes featuring it, including the famous Bonni Bakes' Curried Chicken Salad. The raw chutney ingredients (mango, apple, sweet red pepper, onion & friends) have to be chopped into small pieces prior to cooking, then they're transformed into that unique multi-purpose condiment.

If you're looking for something sweeter, taste samples of all my jams. Mango Strawberry Cardamom with subtle spice; Strawberry Orange the essence of Florida; Mango Daiquiri with rum & lime, or Strawberry Earl Grey whose soft set is perfect over muffins, ice cream or dessert.

This Saturday I'm teaching a class based on recipes from the book "Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day". The picture above shows a variety of items you can bake using the same dough. We'll be making bread and pizza...then eating the evidence! I hope to bake some fresh bread for Sunday, but it will depend on how much time I have.

I buy a ton of scallions. Something I recently learned is that you can cut off the dark green tops of scallions, then place the white base with its roots in water, and new green shoots will regrow. I don't know how many times you can do this, but a week ago I put the stubs in water and look at what I got. The brownish parts on the stem are the height of my original cut and they stay crisp & green as long as I change the water daily, like cut flowers. Fun to save money & recycle at the same time.

One of the most delicious items I've bought whenever I saw them on Sunday, are Geraldson's organic beets. Just wash, wrap in foil with a little olive oil & salt, and bake until tender. My newest favorite salad is a plate of assorted (crisp & soft) mixed greens, roasted beets (sliced or cubed), caramelized onions, goat cheese and a sprinkle of toasted nuts. It's a delicious combination that defines umami for me.

In less than a week I'm off to hang out with family & friends in Berlin and Sweden. My little dog Twinkie will be staying with friends, who have graciously invited her. Since they have two LARGE cats we spent a few hours together introducing them. Despite my obvious fear, all went well. Twink is a lucky puppy & about to have a great adventure.

I plan to relax, enjoy the company & my surroundings, eat lots of bread & embrace the local food. Who knows what wonderful influences I'll be bringing home. And knowing me, you'll get a chance to sample it soon too.

OMG, it's almost MAY

It's been a while since Anna & I baked & sampled the recipe of the week from "Inside The Jewish Bakery", but I thought I'd let you know what I've been up to.

For the past weeks, almost months, I've been happy to be supporting Geraldson's Organic CSA Farm by participating in both their Sunday Farmer's Market and Buying Club. I you want to experience the benefits of locally produced food then you should be supporting our  local farmers and crafts people providing it. Depending on the week, the Sunday Farmer's Market offers organic produce,  fresh goat milk, goat cheese & yogurt; local honey & handmade soaps; hand crafted wood; organic sauerkraut; locally caught fish; homemade authentic tamales;  and other stuff. Geraldson's Farm is on the same road, just before Robinson's Preserve, and they are both a delightful way to spend some laid-back time.

Geraldson's Sunday Farmer's Market is open from 11-3. You can purchase organic produce without having to be a supporting annual member...although that isn't a bad idea either. I have been involved since the beginning and it will only be operating until the end of May. I, on the other hand, will not be available for the long run. Happily, I'm off to a birthday party weekend in Berlin, and on to Sweden, toward the end of the month of May.

Along with other vendors, I will be at Geraldson's tomorrow from 11-3 and here are some of the yummy things I've baked that you can find then...

Blueberry Cheese Braid, sold in small sections, like an individual danish.

Then there will also be a limited number of my new Blue Cheese/Cheddar Handmade Crackers, perfect for a cocktail party.

That of course goes along with my basic offerings of Chocolate Orgasm Cookies, unique jams and Mango Churney, Breadstix, Cookies, etc .

To my friends who know how my son Rob spent the last year in Houston producing a reality tv show, it is premiering tonight. Check out "Flipped Off" on A&E at 10pm Sat. What you won't see is how he was sucker punched with brass knuckles while out with the cast/crew and suffered a broken nose, 20+ stitches to his face, rattled teeth and a probable concussion. Show biz.

A few days ago my friend Melissa & I went to visit the Giraffe Ranch in Dade City. It was wonderful and I'd be happy to share my enthusiasm with you. Meanwhile, here are a few pictures:

Not only did they love to scarf up tree branches from us with their sand paper tongues, better yet were the chunks of fresh cabbage. Imagine what they'd do with NYC Classic Deli Cole Slaw!!

This is the adorable unplanned LOVE CHILD of a beautiful Zebra and a romantic Donkey. Viva la amour!!! A zebra vision in browns.

The hippos were sleeping when we arrived but a few carrots & shouts aroused one of this married couple. Who do you think was interested, and who do you think was the happy hippo couch potato? I won't tell.

Our day at Giraffe Ranch started with a camel ride. I liked the look of camel #2, who turned out to be named Dufus...of course! We were connected to Melissa's lead camel, whose name I don't remember, but don't they look like they're in charge...

Have a great weekend and I hope to see you soon...before flying off to Germany & beyond.

Hugs from the TreeHouse kitchen,

What's coming UP for Bonni Bakes in April

This has been a fun time for me to experiment with yummy things I've been wanting to bake for a while but haven't had the time before. Truthfully, I really don't have the time now, but I believe that making time for personal pleasure is critical. How else can you re-energize yourself and give to others? Whoops, launching back into my clinical social worker mode, but it's still good honest advice.

I hope you're familiar with the treasure that we have here in Manatee County... the organic Geraldson Community Farm, operated as a CSA farm where you purchase a share of the season's crop and receive your ample allotment each week from Nov-May. They're conveniently located in NW Bradenton, just down the road from Robinson Preserve, which you need to experience for your mental health...nature trails, birds, marshes, sanity, silence & smiles.  Come & enjoy the new Sunday Farmer's Market @ Geraldson's.  I'm proud to be a big supporter and vendor there. Come visit this lovely farm each Sunday (except on Easter) from 11-3 where you'll find organic produce and a variety of local vendors. For info check out www.geraldsoncommunityfarm.org

This Sunday, April 1st, I'll be back there with a variety of baked goodies. I'll reprise last week's big hit,  BREAKFAST MUFFINS -- light corn muffins chock full of bacon, Cheddar and sauteed scallions, as well as BLUEBERRY LEMON MUFFINS -- delicate lemony muffins bursting with juicy blueberries. I've been playing with bread dough and will have some of my classic MINORCAN MULTI-GRAIN LOAVES -- made with organic 5 grain cereal & seeds plus something totally new, APPLE STRUDEL BREAD -- filled with raisins, cinnamon & nuts. In addition to those, there'll be the ever mouth watering MANGO PECAN RUGELACH -- filled with my Mango Daiquiri Jam, raisins & cinnamon, joined by a variety of my chunky cookies and delicious homemade jams & mango chutney. Come visit the Sunday Market or order by email at bonnibakes@gmail.com

Next week it's something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT...

If you've ever considered downsizing, and worried about how you could live in a little box, please visit my home the TreeHouse, during the Village of the Arts annual Garden Walk from 11-4 April 6 & 7, 2012.

A few years ago I designed and built a small (under 1000 sq ft) two story house that I call my TreeHouse. It was designed to wrap around an existing Haas avocado tree, and positioned so I could easily pick fruit from my second floor deck. I tried to utilize as many available energy saving & green products as I could. The challenge for me (a person who had NEVER DESIGNED ANYTHING BEFORE) was to create a home embracing both my ideal of personal comfort combined with my desire to leave a small footprint on the planet. Size 7 to be exact.

Experience the surprising spaciousness of this 965 sq ft home. See some of the unique details I incorporated in my design, like glass block in the bamboo floor; hand-painted Miro reproductions on the kitchen back-splash & shower wall; a tankless hot water heater; Victor Garcia's execution of the polished aluminum handrail; a unique sailboat inspired wall hanging system; extensive use of plexiglass; ductless "split" air conditioning system, and a lot more.

Get ideas for your own projects and maybe your average electric bill will be around $50 too. You might like to read Wade Tatangelo's recent Bradenton Herald article feature on my house. You can find it at  http://www.bradenton.com/2012/02/17/3880534/welcome-to-the-treehouse-bonni.html

My TreeHouse will be on tour Friday & Saturday from 11-4 during the Village of the Arts Garden Walk, April 6 & 7, 2012. I'll be around to answer questions and share information. Architectural plans will be available for sale in the near future.

For information or driving directions call (941) 746-6647 or email me at bonnibakes@gmail.com

Hugs from the TreeHouse,

OMG, it's our last bake from the challenge

 Chocolate Babka cooling before cutting

Somehow the last three months have flown by and suddenly we're at the end of the "Inside The Jewish Bakery" challenge. For me it's been a wonderful opportunity to re-create and share delicious memories & tastes from my childhood. Even better, was experiencing it with others who had a similar reaction. And talking about the memories...

This challenge has given Anna & I another chance to play in flour together. Our final bake on Friday was the classic NYC favorite (especially if you watch "Seinfeld") CHOCOLATE BABKA...a fitting finale. I actually baked two more loaves on Saturday, one chocolate and the other almond-raisin-walnut. Some of you were the lucky recipients & taste testers of those. Here's the whole Babka back story.

Special dough sprinkled with Belgium chocolate & cinnamon sugar

Yup, the filling was uniformly sprinkled by very experienced hands

Two different sized Babkas, twisted sisters in their loaf pans

Risen Chocolate Babka, topped with streusel & ready to bake

Ah, delicious Chocolate Babka with a river of chocolate running thru it

The other Babka, with almond paste, raisins & walnut filling

NO photos of this baked Babka because it was devoured too quickly

Now it's time for both of us to do something a little different. Anna is about to begin college full-time, in addition to working in St Pete. I've got to downsize my possessions & get my house in Whitfield Estates ready to go on the market. My dog Twinkie continues to do as little as possible, except for being funny & adorable.

Thanks Pat for containing her exuberance!!

Many people have asked how they can order some of the wonderful things we've baked. I can do that by special order --  call me at 941-746-6647 or email bonnibakes@gmail.com.

Instead of our weekly tastings, I'll now be open during the Village of the Arts' monthly ArtWalk...the first Friday night from 6-9:30pm and the following Saturday from 11-4pm. There will be a variety of baked goods and collectibles available as I downsize my personal holdings.

Come visit the TreeHouse, it's down the driveway path alongside the former BONNI BAKES BAKERY/CAFE.  Walk thru the white wrought iron gate next to the green wooden fence, and follow the driveway.

My home, the TreeHouse, will be open to tour during the Village April 6th & 7th GARDEN WALK from 11-4. I'll also be at Geraldson Community Farm's Sunday Markets from 11-3, at the NW Bradenton farm. For info  www.geraldsoncommunityfarm.org

For those of you who can't live without embracing (aka devouring) a bag of Chocolate Orgasm Cookies, Breadstix or those cookies I make with oodles of Belgium chocolate...they're available on Sundays at the farm & by special order. I've also canned some interesting jams, based on my incredible Keitt Mango Tree & local Strawberries. Check out my Strawberry Mango Cardamom, Mango Daiquiri, Mango Chutney and Strawberry Earl Grey jams

Here are some pictures of the delicious things we've baked recently:
